Individual Adult Therapy in New York and New Jersey
My adult clients come to therapy for a variety of reasons, but many of their struggles are often rooted in attachment injuries from childhood or adverse childhood experiences. These experiences can lead to a range of symptoms, including anxiety, depression, dysregulated nervous systems, relational conflicts, reliance on costly coping mechanisms, and difficulties functioning in various areas of life.
Depression
Depression is a mood disorder that can cause feelings of sadness, crying, decreased enjoyment of life, listlessness, and pessimism. Severe depression can affect sleep, appetite, cause agitation, and slow movement. Extreme depression can incapacitate a person, making them unable to perform daily tasks and can be a major cause of underachievement.
Anxiety
Anxiety is a common feeling that can manifest as persistent nervousness or be triggered by specific situations, such as phobias and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Physical symptoms include sweaty palms, rapid heartbeat, and panic attacks. Therapy can help individuals manage anxiety and related disorders like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) for a more fulfilling life.
Highly Sensitive People/Introverts
Highly Sensitive Persons (HSPs) and/or Introverts often feel exhausted, unfulfilled, and misunderstood due to their unique wiring. Their nervous systems can become dysregulated frequently, making it crucial for them to learn how to manage external influences, bodily sensations, and thought processes in a way that suits their temperament.
LGBTQIA2S+
Compassionate help with issues such as gender orientation, sexual orientation, coming out and diverse relationship orientations.
Trauma
Many clients with complex trauma histories report feeling misunderstood by others, exhibit feelings of shame and worthlessness, encounter relational challenges often showing patterns of anxious or avoidant attachment in adulthood, repeat childhood patterns in their work or relationships, and experience difficulties with emotional regulation, which may appear as numbness or emotional instability. This can result in PTSD.
Stress
Feeling overwhelmed by life’s demands can manifest in chronic headaches, insomnia, digestive issues, weight concerns, and memory loss. These symptoms, along with irritability and racing thoughts, are signs of high stress. Recognizing when to seek help is crucial. Therapy can offer new perspectives, connections, and a way to break negative thought patterns, helping you regain control and balance.
